Chapter 24 – My Journey Home is now complete….and yet the journey has just begun!

I think the best present I have ever given myself was hiring Nancy Duffy, owner of Muddy Boots, and William Deaver, owner of Trademark Homescapes, to design and install a MASSIVE landscape project at my new house.  The outdoor “living rooms” on this new property are as important to me as the indoor ones and I knew I did not have adequate knowledge of plants, materials or process to figure out how to reshape almost 3 acres of untended hardwood forests on my own. I have some incredible features that provided good background for the...

Chapter 23 – Sharing the green message with a younger generation

Chapter 23 – Sharing the green message with a younger generation

People often ask why I am so committed to living a “green” lifestyle when there’s only me, one me, and my dog in my household.  The truth as I see it is that what I do makes a BIG difference for the generations behind me.  I believe that because it is in my power to build a net zero carbon emission house, I must do so and thereby I leave a legacy to my nieces and nephews, to all young people, who will have big decisions and sacrifices to make in their lives because of many of the things my generation and my parents’...

Chapter 22 – Awards Justly Deserved

The Asheville Home Builder’s Association held their awards banquet on October 17 for the 2013 Parade of Homes.  I am so proud of Blue Ridge Energy Systems.  They won not one but two awards!!  They won the Innovative Home Award as well as a Silver Award for Craftsmanship.  I’m sure they would also have won the Green Certification Award if we had only been further along with our LEED certification process and photovoltaic installation.  No other home on the Parade was designed for net zero carbon emissions. Parade of Homes was an...

Chapter 21 – Week One in a Blue Ridge Energy Systems Home

It has been one week since the movers came, I unpacked, hung art with Randy Redrick’s invaluable assistance, and then greeted over 400 people at Parade of Homes October 12 and 13.  It’s a blur to me, but I wake up each morning with gratitude and I climb into bed at night seeing the moon and stars through the clerestory window in my bedroom.  I have to pinch myself to believe it’s all real!! This joy is in direct contradiction to the heart wrenching pain of the massive hemorraghic stroke my sister Leigh suffered on Sunday,...

Chapter 20 – We have a CO!

Chapter 20 – We have a CO!

For those of you who have never built a house, getting a CO (Certificate of Occupancy) is the final step for the building contractor….and the green light for the homeowner to move in!  Well, we got all inspections passed on Friday, Oct 4.  That is date I will long remember. This project has been all consuming for me and for the Blue Ridge Energy Systems crew.  They have delivered my dream home even earlier than had been expected!  How many of you who have built a home can say that?! I have had remarkable help from Randy Redrick getting...

Chapter 19 – The mechanical room is the brains of a BRES home, but the garden is its soul!

Chapter 19 – The mechanical room is the brains of a BRES home, but the garden is its soul!

The scaffolding is down!  The stucco is complete and the house’s exterior exceeds my expectations.  I’ll be the first to admit that it won’t appeal to everybody, but I make no apologies for the contemporary design of this house!!  I SIMPLY LOVE IT. William Deaver, owner of Trademark Homescapes, and his co-workers David and Julius, have been hard at work transforming the compacted, scarred earth into my version of paradise. Building stone steps, removing rocks and debris, obtaining the final grade around the house, and adding...

Chapter 18 – It’s coming together!!

It has been way too long since I last posted so I thought I’d set the tone with this quote by Taj Mahal, a Grammy award winning blues musician: Remember that feeling as a child when you woke up and the morning smiled?  It’s time you felt like that again. Well, that is how I am feeling.  It has been all about finish details, clearing the lot and stucco…more stucco!  Will it ever end?!  The final application of Dryvit (applied on top of the two scratch coats) is almost done then the scaffolding can come down.   Getting around the...

Chapter 17 – Progress: Interior painting, spalted maple ceilings, blown ceiling insulation & stucco

Well, if you receive my blog as a subscriber, you got more spam on the last post.  Please accept my apologies and know that our webmaster is hard at work to erase all traces of this embarrassing situation.  The good news is that the Blue Ridge Energy Systems website has been cleaned again and I’ve got my fingers crossed!  I will email all subscribers when each new blog post is online rather than using the automatic feed.   That should be the end of viagra ads!! The work these last few weeks has been exciting.  All sheetrock has been...

Chapter 16 – Interior spaces: Insulation, vapor barrier and sheetrock installation

I can’t believe I’m writing this, but I already miss my framing crew!  They have packed up their trailer of tools and have moved off the site. They have completed their job for me and are on to the next Blue Ridge Energy Systems home under construction in Waynesville, NC.  The good news is that I now have a parking spot at the house!!  Don’t you think the homeowner deserves a reserved parking spot?! In all sincerity, my quote for this blog chapter goes out with special affection to all the crew including Jammie, Matt,...

Chapter 15 – Spam, anyone?!

Let me start with an apology to those of you who received my last blog and found a viagra ad inside the post!  Discount Pharmacy hijacked 20 – 30 files on our website and added this “freebie” to my post.  Since I use Google Chrome for my internet browser, I have a higher level of security so it prevented me from seeing it.  But I know plenty of you saw it and I apologize!!  Our webmaster Nathan Jordan at Market Connections has been hard at work scrubbing the website, we’ve updated our version of WordPress (the software...
